Service to Cincinnati & Beyond

Cincinnati Projects

In terms of community service I like to vary my pursuits and try new things. I've participated in numerous activities including Into the Streets, Relay for Life, Bridges Walk for a Just Community, Cincinnati Dance Marathon, Over the Rhine cleanups

  • Into the Streets: I was paired with several other students and the Cincinnati Police to rate every car on several streets east of campus for the probability of break in or theft.
  • Bridges Walk for Just a Community 5K Run/Walk: Route guide with several other UC students that I now call my friends.
  • Relay for Life: As the team captain for Student Government I have organized our nightly activity as well as an hour on stage.

Kansas City

In March of 2012, I traveled with 11 other UC student to Kansas City, MO to work with the Fuller Center to rehabilitate area homes for one week.  Not only did I gain valuable renovation skills, new friends, but most importantly I gained an appreciation for a city of people who needed an extra hand.  Kansas City has many affluent areas, but there are just as many homes and locations that need a repair or two.  The Fuller Center is a spectacular organization that assesses need and provides labor and materials for KC's residents.  In one short week I met some of the strongest and most dedicated individuals and I learned to love a new city!

Teach for America - Alternative Spring Break
I spent my past spring break, March 2013, as part of the Teach for America Alternative Spring Break program in the Las Vegas Valley.  Along with 20 other students from across the country, we volunteered with current Corps members in their Las Vegas classrooms for one week.  We also worked in small groups to create innovative solutions to the education gap and inequalities that Las Vegas faces.  My group created a solution in which the school becomes the community center for each neighborhood.  The school would host community events and educational opportunities in the evening for families and community members.  We imagined that the school would host health screenings, cooking lessons, ESL classes, and much more.

My experience in Las Vegas is part of the reason I feel so passionate about the Teach for America mission.  I got to experience first-hand how educational inequity affects urban students. Volunteering with the Corps members also showed me how challenging it can be to be in these environments.  Despite the challenge, I have applied to be a member of the 2014 Corps!
